Vamsi Kanumuri a.k.a Michael is born and raised in India. Since childhood, he always had a natural incline and passion towards dance. After completing his Bachelors, he started working for a IT firm and joined SDIPA [ShiamakDavar Institute of Performing Arts] in India and within short time got selected to the expert batch and got trained by renowned Bollywood movie choreographers/Performers and performed Indo-Jazz/Bollywood dance at various events. He also started a dance team called Crazy Legs.
In Dec 2006, he decided to move to USA to pursue his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering at NMSU [New Mexico State University], Las Cruces. His journey of dance followed him. He joined the Dance department and in Dec 2008 graduated with a Master’s degree along with a Dance Minor.
Under the guidance of the Dance department director Debra Knapp Vamsi trained in Bill Evans Dance Pedagogy. He also got trained by Betty Burgess, Eric Fierro, Luis Molina learning Ballroom, Latin both International and American styles. During his time at NMSU, he auditioned and got selected to be a part of University dance teams Contemporary Dance Theater, NMSU Dance Sport and Dancer’s Unlimited. He also taught hip hop, Bollywood, jazz and lyrical/contemporary at a local studio called Crimson Rhythm. During his senior showcase, his contemporary choreography dance piece got selected to be taken to ACDF [American Contemporary Dance Festival] and also earned him BEST CHOREOGRAPHY EXCELLENCE for the dance season at NMSU dance department.
In Jan 2009, Vamsi moved to Colorado Springs to work for Progressive Insurance in the IT Department. He started learning, teaching and competing with a local ballroom studio. He competed in Colorado Star Ball and won Best Newcomer award for placing 1st in 10 of 12 dance styles he competed in. He later also started working at Dance Unlimited teaching Jazz, Bollywood and Lyrical styles. He met his beautiful wife Tawnye at Springs Rhythm while teaching a Ballroom class and fell in love and they got married in July 2011 and are now proud parents of two handsome boys Murari and Timothy Kanumuri. They also have two dogs Rocky [A Leonberger] and Leah [A puggle] who they absolutely love.
In 2013 he joined CEDA [Cutting Edge Dance and Acro] studio that teaches in Castle Rock and Arvada. His potential was quickly recognized by the studio owner/director Jeffry Williams and was asked to choreograph for competitions and in 2014 he was also made the Artistic Director for their new location in Elizabeth, CO. Many of the pieces choreographed by Vamsi placed in the Top 10 in Regionals as well as the Nationals.
Vamsi and his wife Tawnye made the decision to fulfill his dream of opening a studio and that dream became a reality in Sep 2016. They opened THE BARN DANCE ACADEMY in Elizabeth, CO and started spreading their passion for dance to students of all ages. His dream and vision to train dancers in technique and performance and help them become better human beings as well.
Vamsi is excited for this new adventure and looking forward to the bright future. He likes to thank all the wonderful people he met in his journey so far that have helped him grow as dancer, choreographer. He also thanks the students and parents for their love and support as he continues to spread the meaning of dance.
